An insight into the thought processes behind my university ceramic work

My work combines thoughts on human nature, our use of genetic modification, and our relationships with each other and the world around us.

The starting point is my fascination with the world beyond our sight. The scanning electron microscope opens up this world to us, and I use images of insects, parasitic organisms and human internal structures as inspiration for my work.

I combine these images to create my own form of genetic engineering. In doing this I aim to produce work that displays aspects of human emotions and behaviour , whilst also wanting to highlight human interference with the world of science which I believe is due to curiosity and the desire for knowledge and understanding.

My ceramic pieces take on a life of their own and I want them to be visually unsettling. Viewers should engage on a variety of levels with the pieces free to experience touching the textures and in turn fulfil some of their own curiosity.
